Building small cottage with little money on your land offers the opportunity to combine your basic carpentry skills with the quality time you can spend with your family. It is not necessary to have a large team of people or a costly foundation. Instead, build a cheap cabin with the help of a friend and the tools that you keep safely in your garage. There is no need to pay for expensive foundations, instead, use as a base a basic concrete block, wooden structures, and a metal roof to build the cabin of your dreams.
Place the concrete blocks as the base for your small cottage. Dig 4 inches (10.16 cm.) Into the soil and place the gravel there before supporting the concrete blocks. The gravel will help keep moisture away from the blocks preventing the foundations of your cabin from moving. The spaces between the blocks must all be the same and the separation must not be greater than 8 feet.
Place the beams on the concrete blocks. Using 4×4 or 4×6 beams, place them in the holes you see in the blocks. If your blocks do not have these holes, it will be necessary for the drills to be able to place the beams firmly. The beams provide a safe and balanced base to build the floor of your small cottage. It is not necessary that the beams are new as long as they are straight and in good condition.
